George Asimakopoulos

Mr Asimakopoulos has been a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London since 2014. His main areas of interest include Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) using the off-pump technique, Aortic Valve Replacement using less invasive surgery with sutureless valves and aortic surgery. He has extensive experience in treating aortic root aneurysms and aneurysms of the ascending aorta, infections of the heart valves (endocarditis) and aortic dissections. He regularly performs re-operations, on patients who had previous heart surgery.

Prior to moving to the Royal Brompton he was a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Bristol Royal Infirmary from 2008 till 2014. Overall, he has performed over 2,800 operations.

Mr Asimakopoulos trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery in London from 1999 until 2007.  In his earlier years he became Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Eng.) in 1997 and completed a PhD at Imperial College School of Medicine in London from 1996 till 1999. He grew up in Athens, Greece and studied medicine in Hamburg, Germany.

He decided to practice medicine in the UK when he first visited London as a medical student. He is committed to improving the treatment of cardiac diseases in the UK. He also has an international understanding of health care.

Scientific Articles

He has published over 70 peer reviewed scientific articles. His current areas of interest in research include the performance of sutureless aortic valves, outcomes of surgery for aortic dissection and training in cardiac surgery.

Particular Interests

He is particularly interested in training young surgeons. His role as Educational Supervisor to cardiac surgical trainees at the Royal Brompton Hospital and as a Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons allows him to formally contribute to the education of trainee surgeons.

He was recently appointed as cardiac Surgical Tutor of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) of Great Britain and Ireland and regularly participates in the national selection of surgical trainees.

Outside surgery, he enjoys studying evolutionary psychology and historical biographies and foreign languages. He lives with his family in West London.
